Two years ago, I was given two choices 1) disfigurement by toxic drugs and radiation or 2) Death. . . So when people say we have treatment for cancer, I smile politely instead of ripping their head off. My disfigurement is minor. All tongue cancer treatment survivors have a shriveled face; I have additional alopecia in the back of my head. But the big one is my salivary gland have been reduced to the point where I have constant dry mouth. Coffee and sugary soda acerbates the problem. No I’m not so crazy as to give up coffee, I just live with the consequences. Most people are polite and don’t say anything when I’m laboring while talking with dry mouth, my wife simply says – “Honey go get a drink of water.”
When I wake in the morning I can’t speak, my mouth is so dry. I can not eat food without a drink. Those who eat frequently with me know that if they ask me a question while we are eating, it might take up to a minute for me to clear my mouth enough to answer the question. Bless them for their patience.
Which bring us to the reason for this blog- what options do I have to drink. Typically I have milk or soy milk; occasionally, I’ll have Almond or rice milk. The other day I found Columbia Gorge Organic Pure Pressed Just Greens at the supermarket – FABULOUS STUFF. Most of the vegetable juice have too much tomato (to much acid for my stomach) or too fruit juice (heavy sugar intake). They only have it available in 16 oz bottles, which means it is price prohibitive to drink daily.
Then it dawned on me Chilled SPOS. It is basically veggie juice. As a Survivor of Cancer Treatment, I needed to change my food habits to eating foods which are anti-cancer foods. Chilled SPOS can give me that advantage.
Some of my favorite anti-cancer foods are blueberries, blackberries, turmeric, cinnamon, mushrooms, and spinach. All of these get fixed at some point into my three daily meals . . . yes cinnamon rolls are a great way to get cinnamon. Cheerios with cinnamon dusted on top count too.
With Vermont promoting Kale, I’m on a big kale kick and add more kale to all my meals. Making a batch of SPOS and keeping it in the refrigerator, is easy enough to do.
